I will be the first to admit that leaving HK Island for Kowloon is very low on my list of priorities.  However, when I heard there was a legit and dirty TexMex restaurant initialed TJ (Tijuana) I was the first to hop on the Star Ferry.  The experience was inspiring; older American gentlemen asking young HK girls to take photos of them, and then over-thanking them, cheap beer, dirty wooden tables and stools.  The real selling point- their chips and salsa are actually REAL homemade chips and salsa.  Some may not think that is a huge deal, but to those of us who love us some chips n dip, I moved Kowloon up a notch in my book.

Every now and then there are times when it just won’t cut it to have to give out $14.80 for a nice bottle of cold Beer. It comes to relief that 7-11 on Wellington St (its one of the 4 ones on the street) now sells Guang’s… a Chinese beer brewed to Pineapple taste.

One word. Disgusting…ly cheap. HKD$4.00. That’s right, 4 bucks. Probably because it tastes like molded water with a touch of pineapple juice, or lemon squeeze. Hospital on speed dial just in case.

It’s the once a year event, where plastic cup neclaces and Lan Kwai newbies flock to the two streets in Central for “Beerfest 09″. Or since there are no real beer tastings or places to consume tremendous amounts, this event should be called “Come here if you want to penguin waddle through hordes of people just out to snap photos with footlong telephoto lenses ‘09″. At least the San Miguel cutie was handing out fans, or most of us would have drown in sweat.

Buy 2 party beers, get one free. If the name doesn’t sell itself, perhaps the fact it is made in China? No? Then it must be the seemingly ‘old’ lettering. Having lived in HK most of my life- never once seeing this beer is just frightening. It may expire before adventurers actually drink it.
